Job Description:

Johannesburg City Parks is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Cemetery Workers. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining the grounds and providing essential services in our cemeteries. Your attention to detail, respect for the deceased, and commitment to maintaining a serene and well-kept environment will contribute to creating a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to pay their respects.

Responsibilities:

• Perform general maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, and weed control to ensure the cemetery grounds are well-maintained and visually appealing.
• Dig graves and prepare burial sites in accordance with established procedures and safety guidelines.
• Assist with the placement of caskets, urns, and floral arrangements during burials or interments.
• Maintain and repair cemetery infrastructure, including fences, gates, paths, and signage.
• Assist visitors with locating gravesites and provide information on cemetery rules and regulations in a compassionate and professional manner.
• Conduct routine inspections to identify and address any hazards, such as uneven surfaces or fallen trees, that may impact the safety and accessibility of the cemetery.
• Operate and maintain cemetery equipment and tools, including mowers, trimmers, and small hand tools.
• Assist in coordinating funeral processions and ensuring that they proceed smoothly and respectfully.
• Adhere to health and safety guidelines at all times to ensure a safe working environment for yourself, colleagues, and visitors.

Requirements:

• Minimum of Grade 12 education (or equivalent).
• Previous experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or cemetery work is advantageous.
• Knowledge of horticultural practices, including plant care and maintenance, is preferred.
• Physically fit and able to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work with sensitivity and respect in a cemetery setting.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with visitors.
• Basic knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Valid driver’s license is an advantage.
